51³Ô¹ÏÍø, the first public institution of higher education in the state of Rhode Island, originated from the Rhode Island Normal School, which opened its doors on May 29, 1854. The eighth normal school opened in America, its goal was to prepare young people from Rhode Island to become teachers while strengthening and expanding public education by producing skilled educators who would improve the quality and accessibility of common schools—early public schools open to all children—throughout the state. Rhode Island Normal School's first year's class was comprised of 27 students, although 88 different students attended classes during that first year. Students ranged in age from 15-year old Laura M. Steere of North Providence to 25-year old Sarah G. Peavey of Providence.
